Foster Youth Tutoring

The Valdez Foster Youth Tutoring Program provides focused, intensive, and personalized academic support tailored to each student’s specific needs. Through years of working with foster youth, we have developed a deep understanding of the unique academic, social, and emotional challenges foster youth often face, as well as the individualized support they need to succeed.

Individualized Assessment and Instruction

1. We carefully match every student with a tutor based on their grade level, subject area, learning style, and academic goals and objectives. Each session begins with a review of the student’s current assignments and an assessment of their understanding. The tutor works alongside the student to complete the first problem or task together, providing guided instruction until the student demonstrates the confidence and ability to work independently.
2. Targeted Academic Enrichment
   When students do not have homework or upcoming projects, tutors provide supplemental instruction designed to reinforce foundational skills and address learning gaps identified through assessments and ongoing observation.
3. Foundational Skill Development
   If a tutor identifies deficiencies in prerequisite knowledge or essential academic skills, tutors incorporate targeted instructional materials and strategies designed to strengthen the student’s understanding before advancing to more complex concepts.
4. Session Review and Reinforcement
   At the conclusion of each session, tutors review the concepts and work completed, reinforce key learning objectives, and ensure that the student understands the material before ending the session.

All instructional materials are aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Student progress is monitored through ongoing formative assessments, periodic quizzes and exams, tutor observations, and feedback from classroom teachers. Program effectiveness is measured through pre- and post-assessments, with comprehensive progress reports provided to administrators, teachers, parents, and other authorized stakeholders.
