High School Mentoring

The Valdez High School Academic Tutoring and Mentoring Program provides students with personalized academic support and meaningful mentorship designed to increase academic achievement, build self-confidence, and develop independent learning and critical thinking skills; thus, maximizing their success going forward. According to The Mentoring Effect (2014), young adults facing opportunity gaps who have a mentor are 55% more likely to enroll in college than those without a mentor.

Services are provided on campus through a flexible schedule to meet students’ needs. For example, tutors and mentors are available during lunch, during specific periods throughout the day, and after school. Each mentor is assigned a caseload of approximately 10–12 students and meets individually with each student several times per week to provide consistent guidance, encouragement, and accountability.

Staff document all mentoring interactions in an online Mentoring Log. Staff monitor student attendance daily through an online Daily Attendance Log, allowing the Valdez Program Managers to track participation and identify students who may need additional support.

Academic Tutoring

Academic tutoring focuses on strengthening students’ understanding of daily classroom instruction while providing assistance with homework, assignments, and study skills. Tutoring is offered individually or in small groups, allowing instruction to be tailored to each student’s learning needs.

Mentoring

Mentoring provides students with ongoing coaching, encouragement, and accountability. Mentors help students stay organized, meet deadlines, complete projects, prepare for exams, and develop effective academic habits. Beyond academics, mentoring promotes the attitudes, behaviors, and strategies that contribute to long-term success in school and beyond.

Mentors also monitor each student’s academic progress by communicating regularly with classroom teachers to ensure students remain on track and receive timely support when challenges arise.
